Personal Details
Lal Krishna Advani more popularly known as L.K. Advani was born on 8th November in the year 1927 in Karachi, Sindh which was then a part of undivided India. Advani was born to a Hindu Sindhi family of Kishanchand D Advani and Gyani Devi. Advani did his schooling at his native place, Saint Patrick's High School, Karachi and later he enrolled himself at the D.G. National College in Hyderabad, Sindh for his education.Finally Advani got the degree of law from the Government Law College, Bombay University. He completed his Master's in Sociology from Mumbai University. Advani grew up in an environment of pre partition sindh and even when he was in St.Patrick's School and at the age of fourteen he was highly inspired and influenced by the nationalistic epitome. This inspiration of the patriotic ideals in him made him to join and volunteer for the Rashtriya Swayamasevak Sangh (RSS).
But however career of L.K. Advani started as a school teacher where he handled subjects like English, History, Math and Science at Model High School in Karachi. L.K Advani started his career as a teacher, teaching English, history, math and science to high school students at Model High School in Karachi. L.K. Advani is married to Kamala and they are blessed with a son named Jayant and a daughter named Pratibha. The entire family members of L.K.Advani are quite active in the politics which also includes his daughter in law Gauri.
Career
As mentioned earlier L.K. Advani started his career as a school teacher in Karachi. However his interest in politics came up after he joined as a volunteer in the Rashtriya Swayamasevak Sangh (RSS). Soon his career in politics started when he was appointed as the Secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. His service to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh made him to become the member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.When he was in Bharatiya Jana Sangh party he served in various roles and finally was elected as the President of the party. In due course of time the Jana Sangh party united with other political parties and finally was known to be called as the Janata party. The quality of lacking general approval or acceptance of Emergency rule resulted in Janata Party coming to power thus Advani became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. But within the party there were strong hostility which led to rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
L.K.Advani was one of the most eminent and noteworthy person or member of the party representing it in the Rajya Sabha. L.K. Advani was very active in the party and in the year 1986 he became the president of Bharatiya Janata Party. The entire of Bhartiya Janata party was changed under the control of Advani were he made the party more dynamic and zealous form of Hindutvaa policies which impelled and motivated BJP to great heights.
This improvement in the party highly influenced it for the next assembly elections and in fact Congress was overthrown by Bharatiya Janata Party which came into power. However they didn't last long because of internal politics, corruption, and controversies and they lost in the next assembly elections to Congress. But once again the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 1998 with the coalition of National Democractic Alliance. This time L.K. Advani was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister.
There were lot of controversies and charges against the Bhartiya Janata Party weakened their power and NDA was knocked out of power in 2004 assembly elections. Lal Krishna Advani was very keen on becoming the Prime Minister of India and infact he contested for the same. However this idea of L.K.Advani becoming the Prime Minister was totally extinguished forever when the Indian National Congress won in the previous election before the last. Also that time he had to give his posting of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha to close fellow member Sushma Swaraj because of his defeat.
1947 - L. K.Advani was elected as Secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of Karachi wing.
1951 - L.K. Advani was the member of Bharatiya Jana Sangh under the leadership of Shri Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.
1966 to 1967 - He was the leader of Bharatiya Jan Sangh.
1970 to 1976 - He was the member of Rajya Sabha from Delhi.
1973 - L. K.Advani was elected President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
1976 to 1982 - L.K.Advani was the member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.
1977 - L.K. Advani officially registered himself with the Janata Party along with the veteran leader Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
1977 - Janata Party won Lok Sabha elections and L.K. Advani became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting under the leadership of Morarji Desai who was the Prime Minister of India and Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Foreign Minister. 1980 January to 1980 April - L.K.Advani was the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
1980 to 1986 - L.K.Advani was the General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party
1982 - L.K.Advani was re-elected to Rajya Sabha for the third term.
1986 to 1991 - L.K.Advani was the President of Bharatiya Janata Party
1988 - L.K.Advani was re-elected as member of Rajya Sabha for the fourth term.
1989 - L.K.Advani became the member in the 9th Lok Sabha.
1989 to 1991 - L.K.Advani was the Leader of Bharatiya Janata Party's Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha.
1990 to 1991 - L.K.Advani was the Chairman of Review the Lok Sabha Secretariat Committee according to Recruitment and Conditions Rules 1955.
1991 - L.K.Advani was elected as member of 10th Lok Sabha for the second term.
1991 to 1993 - L.K.Advani was the Leader of Opposition.
1993 to 1998 - L.K.Advani President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
1998 - L.K.Advani was elected as member of the 12th Lok Sabha for the third term.
1998 to 1999 - L.K.Advani was the Union Cabinet Minister of Home Affairs
1999 - L.K.Advani was re- elected as member of 13th Lok Sabha for the fourth term.
1999 to 2004 - L.K.Advani was the Union Cabinet Minister of Home Affairs
2002 to 2004 - L.K.Advani was the Deputy Prime Mnister
2002 July to 2002 August - L.K.Advani was the Union Cabinet Minister of Personnel, Pensions and Public Grievances (additional charge).
Achievements of L.K.Advani
L.K. Advani has always been a part of the Rath Yatra which is more popularly known in Indnia as the Eternal yatri or Eternal Charioteer. L.K. Advani has far taken 6 yatras throughout India. Advani's first Rath Yatra started in the year 1990 on 25th September from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya. The main concern of the Rath yatra was Mandir-Masjid dispute centred around Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site at Ayodhya.L.K. Advani also led the Janadesh Yatra in 1993. It started on 11th September from four corners of the country and Advani led this yatra from Mysore. Janadesh Yatra led through 14 states and 2 Union Territories where the participants of the yatra convene at Bhopal on 25 September in a massive rally. The purpose of Janadesh Yatrawas to seek the people's mandate against the two Bills, the Constitution 80th Amendment Bill and the Representation of People (Amendment) Bill.
L.K. Advani is also one of the main sources for the Swarna Jayanti Rath was they travelled across India between May and July 1997. The Swarna Jayanthi Rath yatra was mainly to celebrate and emphasize on the years of Indian Independence and to show that the BJP party main aim was to run good governance. The Bharat Uday Yatra took place in the run-up to the 2004 Lok Sabha Elections.
In the year 2006 from 6 April to 10 May L.K.Advani organized for a nationwide mass political campaign in the form of the Bharat Suraksha Yatra. The yatra was split into two one headed by Advani from Dwaraka in Gujarat to Delhi and the other one was from Jagannath Puri in Orissa to Delhi under the leadership of the then president of Bharatiya Janata Party Rajnath Singh.
The main motive behind this yatra was focused on left wing terrorism, minority politics, corruption, protection of democracy and price rise. In the year 2011 another yatra the Jan Chetna Yatra was organized by Advani on October 11th the purpose of which was to indicate the mobilize public opinion against corruption of the UPA government and put BJP agenda of good governance and clean politics before the people of India.
Literary Works
"My Country My Life" is an autobiographical book by L. K. Advani. The book was released on 19 March 2008 by Abdul Kalam, the eleventh President of India. The book has 1,040 pages and narrates autobiographical accounts and events in the life of Advani. The book became a best seller in the non-fiction category. The book website claims that more than 1,000,000 copies have been sold.
