Leander was born to Vece Paes and Jennifer Paes and was brought up in Kolkata. He did his education at La Martiniere Calcutta, Madras Christian College Hr Sec School, Chennai, and the Loyola College, Chennai of the University of Madras. Both his mother and father were sportspersons. His father Vece Paes was a midfielder in the bronze medal-winning Indian field hockey team which was held on 1972 Munich Olympics. His mother was the captain of the Indian basketball team in the 1980 Asian basketball championship. In 1985, Paes enrolled with the Britannia Amritraj Tennis private school in Madras (Chennai), where he was coached by Dave O'Meara. The private school played a key position in his before time growth. Leander turned into international fame as soon as he won the 1990 Wimbledon Junior title and became no. 1 in the junior world rankings. Coming from the family unit of sportspersons, Paes showed an early propensity for sports. Leander started to play tennis at the age of 5. Considering the aptitude and prospective in the boy, the Britannia Tennis school, run by the Amritraj family unit, pulled out him for focused training.
