Mallika Sherawat was born to a Jat family as Reema Lamba in Rohtak, Haryana, India. She changed her name to the screen name of Mallika Sherawat where Mallika meaning empress and Sherawat is her mom's maiden name so as to prevent confusion with the other actresses who are also named Reema. She has always affirmed that she is using her mother's maiden name with her's because of the support that she got from her mother from her childhood.

She enjoyed her school life at Delhi Public School that is located on Mathura Road. She also has obtained a degree in the field of philosophy from Miranda House-Delhi University. Mallika has always wanted to become a star and was so firm and rigid on achieving what she wanted to become. She is one amongst the very few actresses who has tasted success at the global platform. She started her career in Bollywood now she has settled in Los Angeles and is often called a Hollywood actress too.

Her presence at the Cannes Film Festival to promote the same film grabbed and brought her a lot of attention with the Time Magazine's Richard Corliss describing her as the next big thing. Her performance in the the year 2006 in the film Pyaar Ke Side Effects that co-starred Rahul Bose was outstanding. The movie won her a lot of praise from in and around the industry and the film also did pretty well at the box office. Her first release in the year 2007 was with ace director Mani Ratnam for the film film Guru, in which she gave a guest appearance in a special song, Mayya Mayya that was a hit. She has also played a guest role in Himesh Reshammiya's film Aap Ka Suroor - The Real Love Story and it was reported that she charged Rs. 15 million for a 10-minute guest appearance. Her last release of the year 2007 was the film Welcome which also was successful at the box office as it received a blockbuster status. In the year 2008 she lined it up with releases Ugly Aur Pagli and Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam. Both these films were very unsuccessful at the box office. She shifted to Hollywood in the year 2009, Mallika Sherawat then shooted for a Hollywood film named Hissss that co-stars Irrfan Khan and was directed by the ace director Jennifer Lynch. The film was based on the legend of Naga which is a an independent co-production between the countries United States and India. Sherawat has also finished shooting for another Hollywood film Love, Barack or Poltics of Love, directed by famous director William Dear. She plays the character Aretha Gupta, a well devoted local Obama volunteer and coordinator. The film is a romantic comedy that was set during Barack Obama's campaign for the US Presidency. She has always maintained marital status as single, but as a matter of fact, Mallika was married for a short while to a pilot named Karan Singh Gill. Only lately she admitted that she was married way back in the year 1993. And while some also say that she has a son but the real truth remains veiled. She has also been the victim of rumours and controversies.
