Significance of the temple
Shillong Centre of Ramakrishna Mission has four campuses. The campus is a beautiful spot located atop a hill which consists of a small but attractive shrine, the adminstrative office, an exhibition cum sale section engaged in propagating Ramakrishna Vivekananda and Vedanta literature and a library named Vivekananda Library.
The second campus which houses a Students' Home is specially for tribal boys of the region, a small guest house and a medicine store for the mobile medical unit is just on the other side of the road. The Charitable Dispensary cum Polyclinic is being the third campus about 400 metres away from the Ashrama. It caters to about 500 poor and needy patients every day. Vivekananda Cultural Centre is the fourth campus in the Ramakrishna Mission Campus which is situated in the heart of the city and carries out several activities in its campus.

The Wards Lake is an important visiting place of Shillong. It is an artificial lake created with swirling walks around and full of fish. Feeding the fish from the bridges over the lake is a favorite pastime for the people visiting here. There are facilities of boating and refreshments available and around 17 kilometers ahead of Shillong by the Guwahati-Shillong Road, is the Umiam or Barapani Lake located which serves as another popular place for outings and weekend visits. Facilities for water sports are available at Umiam.
The wettest places on earth the cold Cherrapunji and Mausynram are about 55 kms from Shillong. Some of the most spectacular sites to visit are the waterfalls of Meghalaya like Mawsmai, Kyndrem and Nohkalikai which are around Cherrapunjee or Sohra, as it is now known.
Travelling 65 kms from Shillong, one arrives at Nartiang, the summer capital of the Jaintia kings. A park of megaliths and a 500-year-old temple of Durga are the attractions.
