The annual wool production of the Indian Wool industry is around 43-46 million kg. It accounts for about 2% of the world's total production. In the last fiscal, India's wool consumption was around 260 million kg. India's wool and woollen industry is the seventh-largest in the world and one of the important sectors of India's rural economy.
In financial year 2022 the amount of wool produced in India was around 33 million kilograms, a decrease from the previous fiscal year.
The wool industry of India provides employment to around 1.2 million people in the organized sector and about 2 million people in the associated industries.
Major Wool Producing StatesThe five major wool-producing states in Indian in 2022 are, Rajasthan (45.91%), Jammu and Kashmir (23.19%), Gujarat (6.12%), Maharashtra (4.78%), Himachal Pradesh (4.33%).
The Indian state of Rajasthan had the highest contribution in wool production by 45.91 percent in fiscal year 2022. This was followed by Jammu and Kashmir with a share of over 23 percent during the same period.
Punjab is the largest producer of woollen goods in the world. Dhariwal in Punjab has a good number of woollen mills. Other centers in India are Amritsar, Ludhiana and Kharar. Ludhiana specializes in hosiery and knitwear, while Amritsar manufactures the worsted, tweed and flannels.

India produces three main categories of wool: Carpet Grade, Apparel Grade and Coarser Grade. These categories make up 85%, 5% and 10% of the total production.
