India is now a sugar-surplus country. During 2021-2022, India has exported around 110 LMT (Lakh Metric Tonne) of sugar. In 2022-23, Government of India has allocated a quantity of 60 LMT of sugar for export to the sugar mills across the country.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association, sugar production till 15thJanuary, 2023 in the current 2022-23 SS (Sugar Season) is 156.8 lac tons, against 150.8 lac tons produced last year on 15th January, 2022, i.e. higher by 6 lac tons. Number of operating factories are also higher at 515 against 507 which operated last year on the corresponding date.
Sugar production is estimated to be 340 lakh tonnes in SS 2022-23, as compared to the peak of 358 lakh tonnes produced in the previous SS 2021-22.
