Spices are the food additives that are primarily used for flavouring, colouring, or preserving food items. India is the world’s largest spice producer. It is also the largest consumer and exporter of spices. The India spices market size reached INR 160,676 Crores in 2022. Going forward, the market is expected to reach INR 298,909 Crores by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 10.9% during 2022-2028.
Exports of spices from India stood at US$ 3.78 billion in FY23.
Production in 2022 stood at 10.87 million tonnes.
During 2022, the single largest spice exported from India was chilli followed by spice oils and oleoresins, mint products, cumin and turmeric.

The most produced and exported spices in India are pepper, cardamom, chilli, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, celery, fennel, fenugreek, garlic, nutmeg, mace, curry powder, spice oils and oleoresins. Out of these spices, chilli, cumin, turmeric, ginger and coriander makeup about 76% of the total production.
Spice producing States in IndiaThe largest spices-producing states in India are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
