India has a coastline which is more than 7,516.6 km long, interspersed with more than 200 ports. Much of the cargo ships that sail between East Asia and America, Europe and Africa pass through Indian territorial waters.
In FY22, the main shipping ports in India handled 650.52 million tonnes (MT) of cargo traffic.
According to the Ministry of Shipping, around 95% of India's trading by volume and 70% by value is done through maritime transport. India has 12 major and 200+ notified minor and intermediate ports.
Indian key ports had a capacity of 646.10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) 2022-2023. In 2022, all key ports in India handled 446.50 million tonnes (MT) of cargo traffic. India's merchandise exports in FY22 were at US$ 417.8 billion, up 40% from the previous year. In FY23 merchandise exports reached US$ 231.88 billion.
Industry Investments• India has plans to invest US$ 82 billion in port projects by 2035.
