INDIAN PAPER INDUSTRY AT A GLANCE IN 2021 - 2022
India is the 15th largest paper producer in the world. India has emerged as the fastest growing market when it comes to consumption, posting 10.6% growth in per capita consumption of paper in 2019-2027.
Paper consumption is likely to witness 6-7% annual growth and will reach 30 million tonnes by FY 2026-27, largely driven by emphasis on education and literacy.
The estimated turnover of the industry is Rs 70,000 crore with domestic market size of Rs 80,000 crore.
Exports of paper and paperboard from India jumped nearly 80 per cent in 2021-22, touching a record ₹ 13,963 crore. In value terms, exports of coated paper and paperboard increased by 100 per cent, uncoated writing and printing paper by 98 per cent, tissue paper by 75 per cent and kraft paper by 37 per cent according to a Indian Paper Mills Association Report. In volume terms, paper exports from India have gone up four times from 0.66 million tonnes in 2016-17 to 2.85 million tonnes in 2021-22. Similarly in value terms, the figures for corresponding years rose from 3,041 crore to 13,963 crore.
Paper exports from India have been on an uptrend since the last five years.India is exporting papers to the UAE, China, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
