Indian is the second largest producer and exporter of leather garments in the world and ranks fifth in the export of leather goods & accessories.
The Indian leather industry is a USD 13 billion industry and is expected to grow to USD 25 billion in next 10 years. The Indian Leather industry employs more than 50% of workforce below 35 years of age.
The Leather industry in India accounts for around 13% of the world’s leather production of hides/skins and handles a robust annual production of about 3 bn sq. ft. of leather. The country accounts for 9% of the world’s footwear production. The industry is among the top ten foreign exchange earners for the country. India has about 20% of world’s cattle and buffalo and 11% of the world’s goat and sheep population.
The leather garments sector accounted for 7.03% of the country’s total leather export in 2021-22.
Leather ExportsOut of the total leather and leather products exported out of India, the footwear segment accounts for the majority of exports, with 2020-21 and 2021-22 exports from the country valued at US$ 1.49 billion and US$ 2.05 billion, respectively. The leather goods export during 2021-22 was US$ 1.29 billion, a 36.3% increase from the previous year.
The finished leather and leather components export in 2021-22 was US$ 456 million and US$ 250 million respectively. The exports of saddlery & harness and non-leather footwear grew by 48% and 10.28%, respectively in 2021-22 over the previous year.
During 2021-22, India exported total leather and leather products of value US$ 4.87 billion, a 32% increase from the previous year.
India exports leather to countries like the USA, Germany, the UK, Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, China, Belgium, UAE, Australia, Poland, Hong Kong, Denmark, Canada, Vietnam and Portugal.
