INDIAN ZINC INDUSTRY AT A GLANCE IN 2020 - 2021
In the financial year 2020 , the volume of zinc production in India amounted to approximately 1.37 million metric tons. India produces about 95 minerals including the mineral zinc. A couple of years back, around 1.5 thousand mines reported mineral production. However, there was a ban on open cast mining of Zinc since April 2018.
In the current financial year, India exported zinc and its products worth over 600 million U.S. dollars. And volume of primary zinc that was exported from India I s around 400 thousand metric tons. However, the country’s import volume of unwrought zinc is higher than its export volume of primary zinc.
In India, the major demand for zinc is from the galvanizing industry, wherein steel and iron needs to be coated with zinc to prevent from rusting. There is considerable demand for zinc from other industrial sectors such as the coating sector and die casting alloy sectors.
