India’s Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) is the world’s second largest zinc miner.
The company’s refined zinc production fell 12 percent in 2019 to 696,000 tonnes due to the closure of its open cast mines, prompting a switch to underground mines. However the output is expected to rise in 2019/20.
The per capita consumption of zinc in India at 0.6 kg is far behind the world average of 2 kg, indicating the country still has a great scope for the growth and development of the Zinc industry.
Domestic production of corrosion free zinc coated steel sheets (galvanised sheets) is barely 7 per cent of total steel production or roughly around 8 million tonne (mt) out of a steel output of 104 mt.
