Overview
India has one of the best granite deposits in the world. With a varied diversity of more than 110 shades, India accounts for over 20 per cent of the total granite reserves across the world. The total granite reserves in the India are estimated around 13.87 crore tonnes and it is one of the largest exporters of granite and granite products in the world.
The Southern and Eastern belts of India which consists of the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam, Bihar, Rajasthan, Orissa, Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh have granite reserves. Indian granite has become the most sought-after and extensively used stone material in building construction and massive structural works throughout the world, and it is well known in the international market, not only for its elegance and aesthetic quality, but also for its durability.
So far, only 3% of the total granite reserves have been explored. More than 100 granite varieties have been extracted and exported after value addition. The turnover of the entire sector is around Rs.25,000 crore, including exports and domestic sales. This industry provides employment to more than 1.5 million people. At present, India’s contribution is around 15% of the global production.
