General Overview
The Indian Coir industry in the country has registered a steep growth in the last three years in
spite of global economic recession.
In 2017 the country achieved Rs 2,282 crore, a record export growth whereas in 2013-14, it was
only Rs 1,476 crore by value and 5,37,040 metric tonnes in terms of quantity.
In spite of the global economic recession, coir exports have gone up every year.
Coir Exports
The export of coir products inches closer to Rs 2000 crore mark, and the Coir Board has outlined plans to double it in three years. According to the Coir Board, coir pith, coir geo-textiles and coir mats will be the products the sector would be focusing to boost export and domestic sales. Coir exports for 2017 touched 752,020 tonnes valued at Rs 1901.62 crore showing 20% rise in quantity and 17% in value from a year ago. There was export of 408897 tonnes of coir products. Steps are being taken to make the coir sector a Rs 25,000 crore industry in next seven years.
