HEADLINES:  

India has a significant share in the international tea market with a 12 per cent share of world tea exports. Indian tea is among the finest in the world. The main tea-growing regions are in Northeast India and in north Bengal. Tea is also grown on a large scale in the Nilgiris in south India. India is one of the world’s largest consumers of tea, with about three-fourths of the country’s total produce consumed locally.

During 2015, India exported 199.0 million kg of tea.CIS countries (Russian federation) are the largest importers of Indian tea. In 2015, CIS countries’ share of India tea exports was at 22.4 per cent, followed by Iran, the US, the UK, the UAE, and Germany was around 12.5 per cent, 9.1 per cent, 8.8 per cent, 7.0 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively. India is home to a wide variety of teas including CTC tea, orthodox tea, green tea and organic tea.




The country is the second largest tea producer in the world. India is also the world's largest consumer of black tea with the domestic market consuming 911 million kg of tea. India is ranked fourth in terms of tea exports, which reached 220.84 million kg during 2015-16 and were valued at US$ 641.95 million. The top export markets in volume terms for 2015-16 were Russian Federation (46.44 million kg), Iran (20.41 million kg) and Pakistan (18.94 million kg).

In terms of value, the top export markets were Russian Federation (US$ 99.12 million), Iran (US$ 79.68 million) and UK (US$ 55.05 million Production of tea reached 1,197.18 million kg in 2015. Around 955.82 million kg was produced in North India and 241.36 million kg was produced in South India. India has around 563.98 thousand hectares of area under tea production. It employs over 3.5 million people across some 1,686 estates and 157,504 small holdings.
