The annual demand for natural rubber in India is about 1 million tonnes. India's total NR consumption stood at 992,235 tonnes in in 2015-16. This has forced the industry to import rubber to meet internal demand.
Natural Rubber imports to India rose by 3 per cent to 454,000 tonnes, compared to 442,130 tonnes in 2014-15.
India's synthetic rubber output is said to triple by end-2016. India is expected to become self-sufficient in synthetic rubber by 2017. India's annual capacity will triple to 550,000 tonners by the end of 2016.
The domestic rubber production declined 13 per cent to 5.63 lakh tonnes in 2015-16, while imports during the period rose by 3 per cent to 4.54 lakh tonnes.
