Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3rd May throughout the world every year to recognise the importance of freedom of press in a civilized society. Free press is a nation's health indiacator. This is the day to look into and formulate ways and means to solve the problems faced by journalists in exercising freedom of press by journalists. Free media acts as a watchdog of the democracy. It has the ability to give voice to the poor and can expose corruption. They help people to voice their opinion on governance and reforms to bring about a change.

In 1991, UNESCO recommended that United Nations General Assembly proclaim May 3rd as World Press Freedom Day. In order to remember and celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, this special day was established by United Nations in 1993. Information to citizens is a fundamental right for their growth and development. This day serves as a reminder to governments to respect their commitments to press freedom.

Press Freedom Day It offers support to media workers who fall victims to any number of measures that restrain or seek to abolish freedom of the press. Observance of the day will inculcate a feeling of security for journalists, who are exposed to violence by leaders and underworls mighty men. It is a day of remembrance for many journalists who have been killed because of their profession. The celebration of this day is to inculcate a triangular relationship between journalists, masses and leaders. It is a reminder day that governments must respect their commitments to press freedom. It is also an occasion to inform citizens about press freedom violation, so that they can contemplate, choose their leaders to act in press freedom directions.

The day reminds the citizens that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down. On the other hand due to freedom of press journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, imprisoned, detained and even murdered. Press freedom day is the day to contemplate and know the process, ways and means to the formation of socialist society. Free press is not a luxury but core of equitable development.
