Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3rd May throughout the world every year to recognise the importance of freedom of press in a civilized society. Free press is a nation's health indiacator. This is the day to look into and formulate ways and means to solve the problems faced by journalists in exercising freedom of press by journalists. Free media acts as a watchdog of the democracy. It has the ability to give voice to the poor and can expose corruption. They help people to voice their opinion on governance and reforms to bring about a change.
In 1991, UNESCO recommended that United Nations General Assembly proclaim May 3rd as World Press Freedom Day. In order to remember and celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, this special day was established by United Nations in 1993. Information to citizens is a fundamental right for their growth and development. This day serves as a reminder to governments to respect their commitments to press freedom.

The day reminds the citizens that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down. On the other hand due to freedom of press journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, imprisoned, detained and even murdered. Press freedom day is the day to contemplate and know the process, ways and means to the formation of socialist society. Free press is not a luxury but core of equitable development.
"Freedom is the essence of life,
Maintain it as human right."
