Migrants Day

World Confederation of Labour remind to all of us on 18th December on Migrants Day the imporance of the participation of migrants in the global economy. It is also equally important that migrants contribute and participate in the progress of social and cultural development of the host societies. Therefore, equal opportunities and equal treatment must be recognised for all the migrant workers or people, male or female.

Today, migration concerns more than 175 million people, half of whom are women. UN Secretary-General, gave a message on Migrants Day: Migrants Day is an occasion to recognise the huge but often unseen contribution that millions of migrants make to the economies, societies and cultural advancement of countries throughout the world.

This day is also an opportunity to identify the challenges, the migration presents for the future. Permanent immigrants when return back their country, bring with them valuable skills, knowledge and experience. Their contribution has been ignored. But this Day reminds their worth in both the countries, the native country and the host country. They are being paid low wages, recieve few or no benefits and work without even minimum safety and health protection. Migrants are often subject to discrimination and marginalization in dealing. Observance of Migrants Day establishes a comprehensive framework to uphold the rights of migrants.
