Army Day


The Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15th every year to commemorate and in remembrance of the late Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa's taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Sir Francis Butcher, the last British commander, in 1949.The Indian Army has been of great help not only to civil authorities but even at other times of emergency and crisis like earthquake, Tsunami, elections, rescued people from floods, quelled riots, build schools, bridges, infrastructure, actively pursuing reforestation.

Thus the Indian Army has not only proved its efficiency in fighting wars but also in all fields at times of requirement. The Armed Forces is been the nation's forefront at all cost and any work which requires discipline the nation turns to them. The main aim of celebrating the Army day is to pay tribute and homage to the veteran soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the war front to protect our country and the people living in it.

They have also played and still playing a significant role in instilling democratization in India. The Armed Forces have dedicated their life for the betterment of the country and always work with the spirit of the motto 'fight to win'. So it is very essential to dedicate a day for this force and to salute them for their bravery. Next year the Army will be celebrating its 63rd anniversary.

Celebration and Activities

Usually the celebration on the Army day starts with paying homage to the martyred soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate, New Delhi. It is followed by parades and many military shows which feature the technology and achievements in Army are being held at the Delhi Cantonment. The day also recognizes soldiers for their brave deeds and gallantry and honours them with Unit credentials and Sena Medals. Apart from the celebrations in the national capital it also takes place in all the 6 Army Command headquarters and various regiments. There are many stunt shows performed by the soldiers on motorcycles and jeeps during the Army Parade. The day also includes floral tributes by the Army Chief General and other defense officials at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate memorial here.

Army Day The Army Parade is highlighted by mechanized columns of T-90 tanks, BLT T-72, 155 MM Soltum Gun, Brahmos Missile and carrier Mortar Tracked Vehicle. At times the Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs) of Army Aviation Corps also participate in the mock combat operations. The bands of the Indian Army provide a colorful backdrop to the parade. The parade on the Army day which is the major event for the day is witnessed by senior officers and military attaches of several foreign countries, besides the chiefs of the three armed forces.
