Dhyan Chand who was born on 29th day of the August month in the year 1905 was a very well-known Indian field hockey player, who is broadly considered as the ultimate field hockey player of all time in the world. Dhyan Chand is most recalled for his astonishing goal scoring feats, in count to receiving three Olympic gold medals in the year 1928, 1932 and 1936 respectively in field hockey, throughout an era where India was the most leading team in the game of Hockey. He was branded as The Wizard for his excellent ball control skills.

Dhyan Chand was born on 29th day of the August month in the year 1905 at Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Dhyan Chand's father was working in the British Indian Army. Dhyan Chand spent maximum of his initial time at Jhansi. At the tender age of 16, Dhyan Chand joined the British Indian army and seized to solemn hockey. In the year 1926, he was designated for the Indian hockey team panned to tour New Zealand.

Dhyan Chand Played an Epic Role in Indian Hockey Team

Subsequently, Dhyan Chand played an epic role in Indian Hockey team winning 3 consecutive Olympic Hockey gold medals in the year 1928, 1932 and 1936 respectively. In the month of December in the year 1934 the Indian Hockey Foundation decided to direct a team to New Zealand tour. Dhyan Chand and his brother Roop Singh were designated in the team, Dhyan Chand, as captain.

Awards and Achievements

In a successive tour, India played nearly 48 matches out of which were played in 28 in New Zealand and the remaining matches in Ceylon and Australia. India won all the games. Out of those 48 games, Chand played in nearly 43 games and notched 201 goals. After returning back to India, Dhyan Chand restarted his duty with the British Indian army. In the month of December in the year 1935, the IHC yet again held an Inter-Provincial Game to choose players for the Olympics team.

Dhyan Chand's team again denied letting him go and once again he was nominated in the India Hockey team without any procedures. Dhyan Chand and the Indian team left on to win the Berlin Olympics in the year 1936 where he was honored with the Olive Crown. Later in the month of November the year 1947, Dhyan Chand was a part of India's trip to East Africa where they won all the matches.

Dhyan Chand was Nominated the Captain of the Indian Hockey

In the year 1934, Dhyan Chand was nominated the captain of the Indian hockey and consequently led the gold winning team at the Berlin Olympics in the year 1936. At the Berlin Olympics, Hitler was so overwhelmed with his play that he offered to make him colonel in the German army, if he approved to play in the Germany team. At the age of 43, he headed the hockey team to the tour of East Africa in the year 1947.

Dhyan Chand Bid Farewell to the International Hockey

In this particular tour Dhyan Chand notched 61 goals in about 21 matches that India played for. After a renowned career of nearly 30 years, Dhyan Chand bid farewell to the international hockey in the year 1949. He retired as the Major from the army and was also the Chief Hockey Coach at the India's National Institute of Sports. For his amazing achievements, the Indian government bestowed him the Padma Bhusan in the year 1956.

The National Stadium in Delhi was Renamed as the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

The Dhyan Chand Award, India's top award for lifetime achievement in the field of sports is presented every year to sportspeople who give to sports not only by their performance, but as well after their retirement. In the year 2002, the National Stadium in Delhi was renamed as the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in his honor. Apart from the Indian lands, even the Astro-turf hockey pitch at the India Gymkhana in London, UK is named after the Major Dhyan Chand. A tube train station in London, UK is also titled after this hockey legend.
